When I heard the word wellbeing in the workplace I used to think..
"Yes! I hear that but it won't work for me because......" and list of a number of reasons such as.
"but I work long hours"
"i'm up early enough as it is"
"My commute is at least 3 hours a day in total'
"I have a meeting with the directors in a week and i have to focus on that"
I could go on but I am sure many of you have heard these reasons or feel the same way.
Its never just the 8 hour meeting at the end of it, its the weeks and months of work prep that goes into delivering on the day.
If I said the following could make a significant difference to your short term and long term mental and physical health, you may not take me seriously. It might not seem a priority.
I wish I made it a priority.
I know the consequences of not putting my wellbeing first. The conscious choice to lead a healthier life.
If the pressure is on at work, grant yourself 10 minutes in the morning to make breakfast at home, a balance of protein, carbs and vegetables.
Whole foods. Real foods.
It will fuel your body and mind for the day. Especially the 8 hour meeting day when there might be just pastries and sandwiches for lunch.
Take a piece of fruit with you. I commited the crime and let it languish at the bottom of my bag as I leaned into the processed and /or low sugar foods and drinks.
Go for all the toilet breaks if you can, even if you don't need to go. Move your body, move the energy in the your body.
Maybe the toilet break can be the prompt to drink water to hydrate your mind and body.
Whatever little prompts you need to bring balance into your day use them, the more frequently you use them the effective they will be.
Repetition breeds habit, like building up muscle at the gym. Its not any one day of action that creates the best results. Like the prep for a really successful meeting. It is the build up overtime that creates true strength.
It builds resilience.
